Mobile Number Portability – India: a week away

As per the latest, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has issued draft regulations for service providers to comply with the upcoming mobile number portability (MNP), which lets users switch mobile carriers while keeping the same phone number.

On reading the fine print floating on the net, I gathered that a user will become eligible to port to another service (viz. “recipient operator”) only when he has used the first (viz. “donor operator”) network for a minimum of 90 days.

The purported timeline for this MNP service to start is less than a week.

What MNP will do to telecom customer churn and revenues remains to be seen! But, this is a sure way towards ensuring that customer is King.
