Review - God is a Gamer by Ravi Subramanian

Author: Ravi Subramanian

Length: 324 pages
Publisher: Penguin Books India
Price: INR 299
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers, Literature & Fiction

Ravi Subramanian is considered to be one of new, young India's finest thriller writers. He has written six bestselling books till date and this book (God is a Gamer) is his seventh book. What a conincidence since Chetan Bhagat's latest book takes him to seven books in total and likewise for Ravi.

Anyways  to give a brief, he is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore) and is currently the head of a leading financial institution.  A career banker and financial services professional, Ravi has worked with several multinational banks. As a result of his extensive background in banks, writing about banking comes quite naturally to Ravi. Each one of his books thus far have been set in the backdrop of a foreign bank and this book is again all about banking and money.

I say what better way to make money than to write fiction about others making money. :-)

I recently finished reading this book and what got my attention was the words "Worlds First Bitcoin Thriller". I had heard about bitcoins and how they have been getting the attention of few people globally. My interest was spooked and i did search for bitcoins to find out more about them.

Ah, things people do for the love of reading!!

So, with my newly enhanced knowledge i decided to get my hands onto this book and blogadda gave me a author signed copy that i was happy to review.

Script: Script is what outlines all the key elements of a book right from visual, behavioral, lingual etc. It is the key which helps people imagine a character in ones mind. I for one believe that a good script is half the work done for a author. This is what i believe is the forte of Ravi. He has always managed to weave a nice script making the characters believable, imaginable. This book of his again has some of the best scripts that i have seen in recent times by an Indian author. My 4 on 5 to Ravi on this.

Narration: In fiction, narration is critical for establishing many elements, including character, appearance, action, etc. It is important and yet we see so many well known authors falter here. I was hoping that Ravi would have done a decent job here. To my pleasant surprise he did. The narration is simple, to the point allowing readers to zip through the pages while still being able to relate to characters/instances/situations. However there are some sentences, paragraphs where you would feel lost. So my 3 on 5 to Ravi on this.

Plot: Plot by definition is the main stay and the call of a fiction book. This is the 'thrill' for which i decided to buy the book. The plot here is good, tight and keeps the reader hooked on right from the page 1. One of the easiest ways of writing fiction is to talk about murder/tragedy first.
This is exactly what Ravi seemed to have in mind especially as he pointed out, during the book launch "Put a murder in the start, a few twists at the end". My 4 on 5 to Ravi on this.

While things do seem well if we look at the overall book, however, there are some things that didnot go well with me. Some of them are following:
1) Ravi saying that the book is well researched. Now that is a big statement and then if you say Samsung is a Japanese company, then i beg to differ.
2) A brief about how exactly a bitcoin money may be converted into real money would be great especially if we are saying that this is the "Worlds First Bitcoin Thriller".

There are few other quirks here and there which i would not point out to spoil your party.

Overall: I would say that overall this is a great read and I would give it a rating of 4 on 5. As always, you read you decide.
